The medical services in Nepali Army started in BS 1982 (1925 AD) with the establishment of Tri-Chandra Military Hospital (TCMH) at Mahankal, Kathmandu. With the intent to honor the brave soldiers of Nepali Army who fell in the great World War I (1914-1918), TCMH was established with 64 beds to provide medical services to the military personnel and their families.
The Welfare Fund Management Committee was established in BS 2032 with the COAS as the chairman. This was further accelerated with formation of Army Medical Service Sub Committee which started its task creating Health Service Management Department (HSMD) in then Military Hospital with 9-beds. From then, HSMD has been continuously providing medical services to the retired and families. The new GOPD Complex was constructed on BS 2077/05/20 which now provides registration, GOPD and Pharmacy services to the beneficiaries.
Responsibilities of HSMD
- To create and renew patient book.
- To register the patients coming for treatment.
- To provide health checkup services to the patients.
- To acquire, store and distribute the medicine and medical supplies.
- To manage the health related equipments.
- To distribute medicines to Shree Birendra Hospital, Military Hopsitals, Field Hospitals, Divisin GOPD, Field Ambulances, etc.
- To provide Emergency Purchase (EP) medicines to the beneficiaries.
- To reimburse the medical checkup cost from 18 hospitals in case of not treatable at SBH.
- To send EP bills to DGMS after cross checking.
